We also have these available in 'Grow Your Own Christmas Tree Gift Packets' as is shown in the next to last photo & in our 4 pack collection of 'Grow Your Own Christmas Tree Gift Packets' that includes a free gift bag as is shown in the last photo. Description: NAME: Douglas Fir OTHER COMMON NAMES: Blue Douglas Fir / Doug Fir / Douglas Pine / Oregon Pine / Douglas Spruce / False Hemlock SCIENTIFIC NAME: Pseudotsuga Menziesii syn. Abies Menziesii COLOR: Yellow with Red Flowers / Tan - Brown Pinecones PLANT SEEDS: Fall / Cold Stratify / Early Spring BLOOM TIME: Flowers: April / Pinecones: Year Round HARDINESS ZONE: 4 - 7 PLANT HEIGHT: 60 - 80' + + PLANT SPACING: 8 - 20' (Cutting / Leaving) LIGHT REQUIREMENTS: Sun - Part Shade SOIL & WATER PREFERENCES: Average - Moist QUANTITY: 20 Seeds OTHER: Douglas is an evergreen coniferous tree that is originally native to western North America, but has become naturalized in parts of Europe & South America. In spite of the common, Douglas is not actually a fir tree or a pine tree. These large trees typically reach heights of 60 - 80' in cultivation, but are long-lived & can grow to heights of 120 - 160' in their natural habitat. As the trees begin to reach soaring heights in dense forests, they lose their lower branches & the foliage may not start for 100' up the trunk. Doug's cones are a tan color & measure 2 ½ - 4" long. They are popular in crafts & decorations. These valuable trees have a large variety of uses besides winning Christmas. Prized for their large size & straight trunks, the Douglas Fir is an important lumber tree, netting a larger amount of timber than any other North American tree. The wood is used in construction & for firewood. Their beauty & adaptability has made them a popular choice for homes, parks, commercial sites, & they are even a popular bonsai specimen. Douglas Firs provide valuable habitat to a wide variety of animal species including spotted owls, squirrels, & tree voles just to name a few. They are an important food source for many of our woodland friends too, from chipmunks & shrews who enjoy their seeds very much to grouse using their needles as their spring food source, & even porcupines for whom their bark is their primary source of food in the winter. The bark, resin, & needles of the Douglas Fir all have traditional herbal medicinal uses. The Douglas Fir has been one of the most popular types of Christmas Trees for over 100 years & remains a best seller today. They grow in a lovely pyramid shape naturally so don't require much pruning to look their very best. Douglas Firs have a very full shape, so are great for larger spaces. The needles are soft & remain on the tree for about 4 weeks after having been cut. They have a fantastic fragrance that is fresh & clean, piney & woodsy, & sweet with hints of citrus. * We also have Fraser Fir & Balsam Fir Tree seeds available in our store plus so much more! * * RECEIVE A FREE GIFT FROM SEEDVILLE USA'S "WILD SIDE" CONSERVATION TEAM WITH EVERY ORDER! AND ... FREE SHIPPING ON ANY ADDITIONAL SEEDS! PAY ONLY ONE FLAT SHIPPING FEE NO MATTER HOW MANY PACKS OF SEEDS YOU ORDER!
